Designing For Accessibility

In a world of ‘cookie-cutter’ home layouts, accessibility isn’t always a priority.  Housing options, both old and new may feature the latest in style and cosmetic appeal, but they don’t always serve our current or future needs for easy movement within our homes.

There are several design concepts in today’s movement for improved home accessibility.  A more in-depth discussion of each is available via their individual page on the side panel of this tab.

Universal Design

Incorporating the features necessary for people with physical limitations into the design of common products and building spaces, Universal Design results in easier and safer use for everyone.

Visitability

Designed to meet the accessibility needs of both its residents and any anticipated guests with disabilities, Visitability features allow the resident to stay in the home over time as their own accessibility needs change.

Aging In Place

In aging, we become vulnerable to many conditions leading to decreased mobility, therefore many of these improvements are designed to help prevent falls.

Renovations

One way to head off these hefty renovation costs is to consider accessible home design during either the purchasing process or the building process if a homeowner is building a custom home from the ground up.
